Description

This presentation explores the captivating history of jewelry making in Imperial Russia, beginning with the remarkable craftsmanship of Kievan Rus (circa 880–1240 CE). This era laid the foundation for a rich artistic tradition, which was later shaped by cultural and industrial influences from the Caucasus and Asia during the 13th to 16th centuries. These influences introduced intricate techniques, vibrant designs, and a blend of Eastern and Byzantine styles to Russian jewelry.

The reign of Peter the Great marked a pivotal transformation, as he invited European jewelers to Russia, fostering a fusion of Western aesthetics with native craftsmanship. However, this history is also marked by injustice—many exceptional artisans worked as enslaved individuals, their remarkable contributions unacknowledged and their names lost to time.

While Karl Fabergé is rightfully celebrated as a symbol of Russian jewelry artistry, this presentation shines a light on the extraordinary but often overlooked jewelers of Imperial Russia. Their exceptional skills and creativity left a lasting legacy that deserves recognition and remembrance. Together, we will uncover their untold stories and honor their enduring impact on the world of jewelry.
