About

I am often asked about my profession, and I proudly respond that I am an appraiser. To me, there is no better job in the world than one that allows you to work with antiques, collectibles, fine art, crystal, memorabilia, and other fine items.

I have been working as a personal property appraiser for over a decade and am a member of ISA. As an appraiser, it is essential to possess knowledge, education, expertise, and experience to determine the value of personal property items accurately. It is my responsibility to offer appraisal services that are professional, objective, and fair, and I adhere to industry standards and ethical guidelines to maintain credibility.

There are different types of appraisers with varying specializations. Some appraisers have expertise in specific types of personal property, such as fine art, jewelry, or antique furniture. This allows them to provide specialized knowledge and a sound opinion of value for those specific items.

Some appraisers are generalists and are qualified to appraise many types of items, such as the contents you would typically find in a home. For example, a generalist appraiser may be asked to appraise items for equitable distribution in an estate.

I am both a Generalist Appraiser and a Fine Art specialist which allows me to appraise many types of items, but no appraiser can be an expert for every item needing an appraisal. When presented with an item that is outside of my expertise, I collaborate with other appraisers in ISA who have more experience and expertise in appraising items of this type.

In addition to specializing in fine art, I have much experience in appraising other items such as model trains and layouts, petroliana (gasoline and oil advertising and collectibles), breweriana (beer collectibles and signs), and vintage personal accessories such as purses and costume jewelry. Before becoming an appraiser, I sold signs for a national neon sign company and can appraise vintage and modern signs of all types including those with neon.

I developed a love for antiques and old items from an early age, as my parents frequently attended art and antique auctions and visited various antique shops to find authentic pieces to decorate our Georgian house, which was designated as a historical building in Texas. I enjoyed joining them on these outings and believe they influenced my decision to become an appraiser.

General Education

I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design. During my studies, I took advanced courses in furniture history, furniture restoration, textile identification and weaving, fine art, architectural history, and creating designs for historical spaces and new healthcare facilities.

Appraisal Education

I became an ISA member in 2013 and established Appraisal Options LLC, advancing to Accredited Member (ISA AM) and obtaining my Fine Art specialty designation within two years. I am now an ISA CAPP member, the highest level of achievement for an appraiser.

I have completed the first in a series of classes titled The Path to Becoming an Art Market Analyst offered by ArtTactic. The classes are taught by Anders Petterson, who is a leading expert on the art market, with a special focus on art market research and analysis. Petterson is the Founder and Managing Director of ArtTactic, a London-based art market research and data intelligence company established in 2001.

To keep myself updated on new policies, methods, and emerging markets I regularly take classes through ISA and other organizations.

Appraisal Services

An appraiser is an expert in valuing tangible personal property such as furnishings, antiques, fine art, jewelry, collectibles, and silver. Appraisals are needed for various reasons like estate planning, taxable estates, gift tax, non-cash charitable donations, equitable distribution, insurance, and damage/loss claims. I am qualified to prepare appraisals for each of these.

My reports comply with the current Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and meet the ISA requirements for professional and ethical appraisal practices. My appraisals are comprehensive and transparent, providing a detailed account of the methodology, research, and reasoning used to determine values.

Having a knowledgeable and experienced appraiser is crucial when it comes to preparing taxable estate and charitable donation appraisals, as these require a high level of accuracy, objectivity, and competence. I have years of experience preparing these types of appraisals and my reports meet the requirements set forth by the IRS and Treasury Department.

I am committed to providing every client with accurate, objective, and competent appraisal services while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and integrity. I welcome new clients, and should they need references, my past clients have always been happy to provide their opinion of my services.
