About

Greer Simonton has been appraising as an Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers since 2001 and is certified in Antique and Decorative Arts Appraisal Studies at George Washington University, Washington, DC. In addition to completing all required appraiser Principles of Valuation coursework, he completed numerous hours of study in antique and decorative arts connoisseurship at GWU. Also, he has studied antiques at The Williamsburg Institute, The Charleston Art & Antiques Forum, The du Pont Winterthur Museum for American Decorative Arts in Delaware, The Tennessee Decorative Arts Symposium, and courses through The American Society of Appraisers and The International Society of Appraisers. He also has twenty years of experience and learning on the job.

Additionally, Greer has passed the national Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP) examination, a Congressionally-recognized set of appraisal standards promulgated by The Appraisal Foundation and he complies by the Ethics Codes and conduct of USPAP. This allows him to be an impartial third party on all assignments.

Greer appraises antique furniture, silver, porcelain, other decorative objects and fine art, as well as household contents. His appraisals are used most often for insurance coverage of fine objects, estate taxes, donations, and division of property. His estate appraisals include the Civil War historian Shelby Foote, entertainer Isaac Hayes, nationally known artist Carroll Cloar and numerous prominent Memphis families.

For clients who wish to sell, he has relationships with auction houses across the country and has helped clients sell at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, New York, London, and Hong Kong; Bonham’s, San Francisco; Hindman, Chicago; Heritage, Dallas; New Orleans Auction Gallery and other regional auction houses. He once managed the sale of a $1.6 million painting at Christie’s Hong Kong.

He had a thirty-year career in business, working for national corporations and retiring as a principal and chief operating officer of Tennessee’s largest advertising agency. This business experience helps him work well in the areas of service and professionalism with attorneys, trust officers, bankers, insurance agents and other professionals, as well as his homeowner clients.

He wrote a freelance monthly column on antiques for the Memphis daily newspaper, The Commercial Appeal for three years. He is past president of the Mid-South Chapter of The International Society of Appraisers and currently serves on the Decorative Arts Acquisition Committee of The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. He has earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
