Jim is a Certified Member of the International Society of Appraisers specializing in Gems and Jewelry.  He holds a double certification, one in Gemstones and Jewelry, the other in Antique and Period Jewelry.  Jim is the past Chair of the ISA Education Committee, and has also served as Vice Chair of this committee.  Jim is also past leader of the ISA Hearing and Discipline Committee. Jim has also served ISA on the Membership and Public Relations Committees, and has been active in developing new contacts and sources of information for the ISA Gems and Jewelry Division.  Jim is a past lead instructor for the Canadian version of the ISA courses in appraisal studies.  Jim served as co-chair of the task force responsible for converting the award winning ISA Core Courses into the Distance Education Core Course in Appraisal Studies.

Jim graduated from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, CA in 1987, at which time he joined the family business, James O. Poag Jewellers, Ltd. in Strathroy, ON, Canada, started by his father in 1957.  From 1987 until 1991, Jim studied the GIA Jewellery Manufacturing programs as well as the Pearl Grading and Colored Stone Grading programs.  He completed the ISA Core Courses in 1993, and followed that with the ISA Expert Witness Course, and the Antique and Period Jewelry specialty course.  Jim was awarded the highly coveted Accredited Appraiser Seal (AA) upon successfully completing the required examination; this is the highest level of achievement offered through the Canadian Jewellers Institute.

Jim entered the ISA Certified Appraiser of Personal Property program, rapidly completing all the requirements, and was awarded his CAPP diploma in the appraisal of Gemstones and Jewelry at the 1996 ISA Annual Conference in Houston, TX.  Jim had the distinction of being the 100th person to achieve the Certified Appraiser of Personal Property designation since the society’s inception in 1979.  Jim then went on to complete his S-CAPP designation (Specialist Certified Appraiser of Personal Property) in Antique and Period Jewelry in 1997, and he was recognized for this achievement at the ISA Annual Conference in San Diego, CA.

Jim was instrumental in developing the Canadian version of the on-site ISA Core Courses, which was written around Canadian laws and codes, and has served as the primary instructor for these courses. He is past primary instructor for the United States on-site core courses, and is a past lead instructor in the ISA Distance Education Course in Appraisal Studies. Jim is the past instructor for the ISA Requalification Course, which is required for accredited and certified members to maintain their professional appraisal designations, as well as for ASA designates who are bridging into the ISA certification program. Due to the success of his business he has suspended his teaching.

In 1998, Jim was awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the Annual ISA Conference on Appraising in San Diego, CA for the many, many contributions he has made to the International Society of Appraisers through his activities in the field of education as well as in the professional business community.

Jim has also served as a member or the ISA Board of Directors and as Vice President in 2010 and 2011.
