William K. Bales is the owner of William K. Bales Appraisals.  His appraisal specialties include Native American art, fine art, and antiques.  From 1987 to 2015 he was a partner of Two Pines Art, where he appraised and sold art and antiques from hundreds of estates and collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.  Bales has undertaken research in Native American art at the Field Museum in Chicago, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and the Philbrook and Gilcrease Museums in Tulsa.  He has acted as co-leader for a number of seminars for the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center of Cortez, Colorado.  His publications include Lakota Art & Music and A Living Spirit: Lakota Art in the Mitchell/ Gantz Collection.   Beyond his expertise in ethnographic material he has had extensive work in a number of different fields including American antiques and fine art, especially regionalists of the American Southwest.  Bales has served as a consultant for such institutions as the Gene Autry Museum of Western Art (Los Angeles), the Stark Museum of Art (Orange, Texas), the Field Museum (Chicago), the Joslyn Museum of Art (Omaha), the Sheldon Museum of Art (Lincoln, Nebraska), the Nelson-Atkins Museum (Kansas City), Spencer Museum of Art (University of Kansas), the Birmingham (Alabama) Museum of Art, and the Pace Setter Corporation (Omaha).  He has worked for a number of auction houses including Sotheby’s of New York. He has worked for numerous insurance companies as an appraiser and as an expert witness and consultant for legal firms including Chubb Insurance.  Bales is a full member of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association (ATADA).
