Description

This course will introduce appraisers to a wide range of Chinese arts including jade, bronzes, snuff bottles, cloisonné, ivories, textiles, lacquerware, and an overview of ceramics.  The goal is to provide the essential knowledge for connoisseurship in Chinese art through studying techniques and symbolism, as well as strategies for identifying fakes.  Key issues specific to valuing Chinese works of art and the current market will be discussed.  Students will learn how the aesthetics of Chinese art were influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism.  Chinese dynastic history and Imperial reign marks will be studied, and the course will include practical hands-on opportunities, as well as a visit to a public collection.
