About

Professional Background:

For the last fifteen years, Ben has been a valuation and authentication consultant to many private collectors, as well as national publications and pricing guides for Civil War memorabilia. His clients have included both Virginia based entities and collectors, as well as many out-of-state clients.  Ben’s appraisal and authentication services have encompassed a wide array of significant items, some with values in excess of $1,000,000, including Robert E. Lee’s gauntlets and chevrac.

 

Consultant to Collectors and Museums, June, 1980 to Present: Ben serves, as one of two principals in Perry Adams Antiques, Petersburg, Virginia. Object acquisition services have been provided to domestic and international clients along with institutions such as the Virginia Historical Society, the Valentine Richmond History Center, the Virginia Military Institute Museum system, Pamplin Historical Park and Museum of the Civil War Soldier, Tryon Palace in New Bern, North Carolina, and the Schenectady County Historical Society in Schenectady, New York. Ben is regularly called upon to assist museums with object authentication and conservation. Ben is currently providing assistance to the Mariners' Museum in Newport New, Virginia, with its efforts to conserve a...............coat retrieved from the turret of the Union Ironclad USS Monitor             

 

Education:

Ben received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. He received his Master of Science Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia in 1975.  Ben completed graduate studies in Anthropology and Archaeology in 1980 – 1981 at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia. Ben's appraisal training has included completion of core coursework sponsored by the International Society of Appraisers and completion of coursework to comply with the Uniform Standards of Professional Practice (USPAP).

Ben has been the featured lecturer for numerous academic and civic organizations including: Historic Petersburg Foundation;  New Kent Historical Society; Montpelier Historical Society; Central Virginia Civil War Collectors Association; The National Civil War Show; The Genealogical Society of Virginia; The Goochland Historical Society; Henrico County Schools; Historic Blandford Church, Petersburg, Virginia; The Helen Baker Society.
